School Committee Backs Guidelines for ICE Interactions

The School Committee voted unanimously Monday, Sept. 28, to approve in general terms the district's cooperation with the state's new PROTECT Act, which requires Massachusetts communities to adopt a policy on local activity by federal immigration agents. Superintendent Lisa Howard said the plan includes an annual policy meeting between school and police officials and a clearer understanding of what kinds of warrants and orders allow federal agents onto school grounds. Policy details are still being drafted and will reflect the district's existing strong trust in the Winthrop Police Department, she said.
