Winthrop Explores Golf Course Lease to Satisfy State Housing Law

Town leadership confirmed Sept. 26 that Winthrop is exploring a 99-year private lease of the Winthrop Golf Club to comply with the state's MBTA Communities Act, or 3A law, making the site technically eligible for housing that town leaders hope will never be built. Proponents include Town Council President Jim Letterie, who led the town's fight against 3A compliance for more than a year before agreeing this summer that continued opposition looked costly and futile. Details suggest the strategy is aimed more at building consensus toward conventional 3A options than at making the fairways the actual solution.
