Council Votes 8-0 to End Taxi Fare Regulation

The Town Council voted unanimously to end the town's authority to set Winthrop taxi rates for in-town trips, a role members said online ride services like Uber and Lyft have made obsolete. Council President Jim Letterie pushed for the vote a month after the council approved raising the base fare from $8 to $10 on a 6-3 tally. Company head Shawn Cluen said he has no plans to raise fares again; state law still lets him set prices for trips crossing town lines, such as Logan airport runs that typically cost $28.
