Muraco Elementary School Rebuild Moves Ahead Amid Falling Enrollment

Superintendent Dr. Frank Hackett reported Sept. 9 that enrollment at Muraco Elementary has fallen to 286 students as of late August, down 10 from last year and nearly 60 since his first year in the district in 2021-22. The town is still proceeding with the Massachusetts School Building Authority feasibility study approved by Town Meeting. The enrollment decline comes alongside a budget squeeze: after the $11.5 million Proposition 2 1/2 override failed in March, the district cut $3.3 million, and Muraco parents saw class sections eliminated and class sizes rise.
