Brandeis Students Build Native Food Forest Garden
Student volunteers spent the summer building a multi-tier edible landscape on the lawn outside Perlman Hall, with native pawpaw trees beneath an old oak, then serviceberry, black raspberries and roughly 30 blueberry bushes, and a ground layer of cranberries, strawberries, mountain mint and ferns. Two pollinator gardens and a prickly pear, New England's only native cactus, round out the beds, and paths wind through so the fruit is easy to reach. Faculty advisor Rachel McKane, an assistant professor of sociology, says everything will be free for the picking once established, and she hopes to hold community harvest days when crops such as blueberries ripen.
