Waltham Deactivates and Covers Flock License-Plate Cameras

Waltham police told Boston 25 News the department deactivated its 16 Flock license-plate readers earlier this month, and city leaders temporarily covered the cameras with trash bags around Sept. 12 while the city waits for the company to remove them. The shutdown follows council concerns over privacy, oversight and the use of drug asset-forfeiture funds to buy the equipment. More than 30 Massachusetts communities are now debating what to do with Flock cameras, and state lawmakers say they plan to file legislation setting statewide rules on data retention and access.
