Council Votes 7-4 to Accept $231K Police Body Camera Grant

The Somerville City Council voted 7-4 on July 28 to accept a $231,635 state grant to equip police officers with body-worn cameras, following a three-and-a-half-hour special meeting. Much of the opposition centered on the financial demands of the devices amid budget cuts and layoffs, and on the lack of a police oversight body promised for several years. Council president Lance Davis drew promises from Mayor Jake Wilson that legislative concerns, including civilian oversight, would be addressed quickly this fall; the grant money must be spent and cameras in the city's possession by Aug. 31.
