Group Fights Sewage Dumping in Alewife Brook

July 28, 2026

Top story

Save the Alewife Brook group opposes continued sewage dumping

Save the Alewife Brook issued a letter Monday urging local boards to reject an MWRA, Cambridge, and Somerville plan that would allow continued raw sewage discharge into the brook during heavy rains. The group says the plan ignores health impacts on the roughly 5,000 people living in the brook's 100-year floodplain, an area it describes as among the most diverse and vulnerable Environmental Justice neighborhoods. The letter comes ahead of an MWRA presentation to the Select Board on the combined sewer overflows.
