Synagogue vandalism suspect pleads not guilty in Superior Court

Nick Ashtar-Zadeh pleaded not guilty Tuesday to two felonies — destruction of a place of worship and malicious destruction of property — plus a misdemeanor civil rights violation, appearing virtually for arraignment as the case moves to Essex County Superior Court. The charges stem from a June 30 incident in which surveillance cameras captured the driver of a red Tesla striking a center island flower bed and the Star of David sculpture outside Congregation Shirat Hayam of the North Shore. Swampscott police identified the vehicle with help from the Lynn Police Department and automated license plate technology.
