Nor'easter Triggers Sewer Overflows Into Mystic

Weekend Nor'easter Triggered Sewer Overflows Into Mystic River

The weekend nor'easter's estimated 2 inches of rain caused at least three combined sewer overflows, including a treated discharge in Somerville Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:17 p.m. that may have affected the Mystic River upstream of the Amelia Earhart Dam, plus a 23-minute discharge Monday morning in the Lower Mystic area. Residents are advised to avoid contact with local water bodies for 48 hours after an overflow ends because of health risks from bacteria and other pollutants. A $1.3 billion plan by Cambridge, Somerville and the MWRA to reduce these overflows is being prepared for presentation to federal and state regulators next year.
