Derrick Rice Declares Candidacy for Somerville Ward 3 Council Seat

Community organizer Derrick Rice, a Craigie Street resident on Spring Hill, declared his candidacy Saturday for the Ward 3 City Council seat, citing public safety, street maintenance and municipal responsiveness. The seat opens when Ben Ewen-Campen leaves at the new year after winning the Sept. 1 Democratic primary for the 27th Middlesex state representative seat; city law requires a special election for ward seats vacant more than 180 days before a term ends. Serena Taylor of Prospect Hill, president emeritus and director of the Somerville Homeless Coalition, filed with the state Aug. 24 for a council run, and Rice's campaign said specific election dates are unlikely until the seat is formally vacated.
