Scituate Names New Elementary School 'Satuit'

The School Committee voted 3-2 on Monday night to name the district's new elementary school Satuit, an Indigenous place name that translates to Coldbrook. Members weighed three finalists: Satuit, suffragist and author Inez Haynes Irwin, and Daniel Ward, an Irish immigrant credited with pioneering the town's Irish moss harvesting industry in the 1800s. The vote caps a monthslong search in which a task force led by Superintendent Dr. Thomas Raab narrowed an original field of five names to three.
