Saugus weighs $36.5M third public safety building

Town Manager Scott Crabtree told selectmen it would cost about $35 million to build a third public safety building covering the west end of town, plus roughly $1.5 million a year to staff it. Funding would require voters to approve both a debt exclusion for construction and a Proposition 2 1/2 override for manpower — something Saugus has never passed. The town already has $1.2 million invested in the proposed facility regardless of how voters decide; a similar effort in the mid-1990s stalled when Town Meeting bought the west-side property but rejected staffing funds.
