Salem Skipper Wins $1M State Grant to Extend Service
Mayor Dominick Pangallo announced Friday that a $1 million state grant will keep the Salem Skipper on-demand rideshare running past its scheduled Sept. 30 shutdown. Officials say the discount program has provided more than 630,000 rides to Salem and North Shore residents in six years, but it lost its original cannabis-revenue funding after a 2022 change in state law and has relied on grants since. Pangallo said the money extends the service for "a limited amount of additional time" while his administration prepares a proposal to the City Council for a longer-term funding model.
