Reading MCAS scores top state averages, but English slips

Spring 2026 MCAS results show Reading students still scoring well above state averages. English proficiency in grades 3-8 fell to 61% from 65% in 2025, and sixth-grade English dropped to 53% from 71%, the weakest result the district has recorded for that grade on the current test. Math held at 64% and science rose five points to 66%, leaving Reading 21 points ahead of the state in English, 23 in math and 25 in science.
