Elm and Beech safety upgrades break ground

August 9, 2026

Top story

Elm and Beech Street safety improvements begin construction

Construction began Aug. 8 on safety upgrades at the Elm and Beech street intersections near Porter Square, part of Somerville's Elm-Beacon Connector project done in collaboration with Cambridge. The work will calm Elm Street and make crossings at Willow Avenue and The Mix more pedestrian friendly, add a raised crosswalk at Cherry Street by the Kennedy Elementary School, convert Mossland Street to a "Neighborhood Way," and create a separated bike lane from Davis Square to Union Square with a spur to Beacon Street. Somerville planner Adam Polinski said the bid process for markings and signal work is nearly complete, with signs already being swapped out and the project targeted for completion by Thanksgiving.
