State Narrows Reid Overpass Replacement to Two Options

State transportation planners presented two remaining concepts for replacing the nearly 90-year-old William J. Reid Overpass at a packed, in-person meeting at the Morse School auditorium on Aug. 6: an entirely surface-level intersection linking Memorial Drive, Brookline Street and the BU Bridge, or a two-lane, east-west bridge carrying only Memorial Drive traffic. The bridge version drew more support from the audience, with residents saying the number of lanes needed for a surface intersection would be unsafe to cross and would leave an estimated 15,000 cars a day idling at signals near the school. The state is taking comments by email for the next couple of weeks and aims to choose between the two options by the end of the year before moving into formal design.
