Healey Endorses Barber for Open State Senate Seat

Gov. Maura Healey endorsed state Rep. Christine Barber on Wednesday in the crowded race for the open 2nd Middlesex District state Senate seat, a day after sitting Sen. Pat Jehlen also backed her. The district covers all of Somerville plus Cambridge's Ward 7 precinct 1, Ward 8 precinct 1, Ward 10 and Ward 11, and other candidates include Cambridge Vice Mayor Burhan Azeem, state Rep. Erika Uyterhoeven and Somerville City Councillor Matt McLaughlin. Azeem called the endorsement "in some ways inevitable," saying it reaffirms that Barber is "the statehouse candidate" ahead of the Sept. 1 primary.
