Sewage Discharged into Alewife Brook, Mystic River After Heavy Rain

The City of Cambridge confirmed Thursday that a full day of rain, heavy at times and flooding streets around town, overwhelmed the combined sewer system and discharged sewage into Alewife Brook. A 48-hour advisory urges people to avoid contact with the Mystic River and Alewife Brook because of bacteria risks. The notice came two days after the MWRA presented proposed fixes to the Arlington Select Board for the decades-long overflow problem, which advocates led by Save the Alewife Brook want Cambridge and Somerville to address with a new system.
