Twenty-five years after 19 al-Qaeda hijackers crashed four planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pa., killing nearly 3,000 people, Fire Chief Jay Dowling and Superintendent Dr. Josh Vadala recall where they were and what changed after. Both describe how the attacks reshaped emergency preparation and school operations in the years since. The attacks also altered national security and daily life in the United States, with effects that remain intensely individual.
