Newton schools weigh spending freeze after $900K shortfall

Newton Public Schools may freeze nonessential spending after the district's carryover funds came in $900,000 below expectations, Chief Financial and Administrative Officer Liam Hurley told the School Committee on Sept. 29. Higher-than-expected expenses last school year ate into the surplus the district carries forward, and a freeze could come later this year unless savings are found elsewhere. No freeze has been announced yet, and the committee has not publicly set a deadline for identifying the savings.
