Newton Parent Alleges Inequities in Math Placement for Black Students
Tony Clark, a Newton Public Schools parent and former educator, alleged in a Sept. 28 guest essay in the Newton Beacon that adults at his son's middle school sometimes hold lower expectations for him than for his white peers. He also alleged that some students are steered away from advanced math without their parents' knowledge. The district had not publicly responded, and the essay comes as NPS prepares Math Pathways, an accelerated middle school math program set for full implementation in fall 2028.
