72-Unit All-Affordable Housing Complex Proposed for West Newton
Beacon Communities filed a proposal Sept. 17 for a 72-unit, $62.5 million all-affordable apartment building with ground-floor commercial space at 1314 Washington St., across from police headquarters on the site of the former Santander Bank, now a dance studio with a police-used parking lot in back. The apartments would be priced for households earning below the area median income — teachers, nurses, city employees and retail workers. Newton Affordable Housing Trust Chair Ann Houston acknowledged neighbor pushback, including calls for the City Council to refuse Trust funding, but said the project has been thoroughly reviewed and that local dollars leverage roughly $9 in state funding for every $1 invested.
