State Bill Could Let Needham Tenants Match Building Sale Offers
A Massachusetts Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act now before a legislative conference committee would let renters in a multifamily building for sale organize to match an outside buyer's offer. They could buy the property themselves or assign that right to a nonprofit or community land trust. Under the House version, any city or town could opt in, and landlords with six or fewer units would be exempt. The Senate version is narrower, a five-year pilot in five communities chosen by the state. Needham's Select Board and Town Meeting have not taken a position.
