Needham kindergarten enrollment drops over 8% below projections

Preliminary Sept. 23 headcounts show kindergarten enrollment more than 8% below projections, a drop Superintendent Dan Gutekanst called more concerning than the district's modest overall decline. As of Sept. 1, 5,281 students were enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade, down 1.4% from the official October 2025 count of 5,355. Total enrollment with pre-K came to 5,365, which is 13 students short of the McKibben Demographic Associates projection for 2026-2027.
