Winthrop School Playground Stays Closed Pending Tree Safety Inspection

New playground equipment is being installed at Winthrop Elementary School months after a nine-year-old student was killed by a falling tree, but the area will stay closed while the city waits for a certified arborist report on trees on the neighboring Phineas Upham House property. Superintendent Cari Berman and Mayor Jen Grigoraitis told the school community the equipment arrived in the final week of September. Once installation is complete, the fence behind the basketball and playground areas will be replaced, with the Department of Public Works overseeing the work alongside a contracted fence company.
