MTA Withdraws Higgins Endorsement in Melrose State Rep Race

The Massachusetts Teachers Association dropped its endorsement of Democratic state rep candidate Jay Higgins on Aug. 14, citing his criticism of opponent Leila Migliorelli over the Melrose Proposition 2 1/2 override. In an Instagram video last month, Higgins said his opponent had "a track record of raising taxes" and called her the lead architect of the override vote; Migliorelli was one of two city councilors on the Financial Task Force that proposed the three override tiers. Voters choose between the two Democrats in the Sept. 1 primary, and with no Republican or unenrolled candidates, the winner will be uncontested in November.
