Mayor Vetoes Late-Night Zoning Change for Student Housing

Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn vetoed a City Council zoning amendment that would have allowed purpose-built student housing by right in part of the Hillside neighborhood. She cited the lack of public participation after 11 p.m. and the way the revote occurred. Earlier in the Sept. 15 meeting, the Council had rejected the by-right change 4-3 and kept the special permit requirement, which the Community Development Board had recommended, before reversing course about four hours in, when few people besides the interested developer remained.
