History Talk Explores Medford's 1917 'Filmland' Studio

Historian Kyna Hamill presents an illustrated talk Thursday at 7 p.m. in Bonsignore Hall at the Medford Public Library, 111 High St., on the silent-film studio once planned near Wright's Pond. In early 1917 the city leased 30 acres to the Society Players Film Corporation, run by F. Eugene Farnsworth, which advertised in the Boston Herald for investors in what was promised to be a second Hollywood; the $100,000 studio lasted only three years. Hamill's talk includes never-before-seen images and covers the fraud, bankruptcy and Ku Klux Klan connections tied to the venture; those needing accommodations are asked to register.
