ADC asks court to let Medford residents defend divestment law

On Aug. 31, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee and local attorney Micah-Shalom Kesselman asked the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts to let more than ten Medford residents and municipal taxpayers intervene to defend the city's divestment ordinance. A pro-Israel group sued to block the ordinance after passage, arguing it intruded on the federal executive branch's authority over foreign policy. According to the ADC, the mayor said he did not intend to defend the ordinance, had his veto overridden by the City Council, declined to oppose a preliminary injunction, and hired a law firm that had publicly denounced the measure.
