Medford resident loses $7,500 in law enforcement phone scam

A Medford resident lost $7,500 after a caller posing as a member of the Middlesex Sheriff's Office claimed there was a warrant out for their arrest for missing jury duty, texted a copy of the purported warrant, and directed them to pay a fine in bitcoin, according to officials. Police issued a public warning Friday, Aug. 28, about the Monday evening scam. The Middlesex Sheriff's Office and Medford Police say legitimate agencies never threaten arrest or demand payment over the phone, and that Massachusetts government agencies do not accept cryptocurrency or gold for fines.
