Middle school grade shift pushed to 2028-29

August 7, 2026

Top story

Middle school reconfiguration delayed to 2028-29 school year

School officials told the School Committee on Aug. 3 that the district's grade reconfiguration will not happen in 2027-28 as first expected, moving instead to the 2028-29 academic year to allow time for feasibility studies. The plan the committee approved last year would shift all elementary schools to grades K-4, place fifth and sixth grades at McGlynn Middle School and seventh and eighth grades at Andrews Middle School. A districtwide survey sent in November 2025 drew about 160 responses and produced five themes for a task force to study, including student transitions, specialized education, space and capacity, logistics, and equity.
