Town, schools' legal spending tops $3.2M over eight years

An analysis of the town's ClearGov financial data found Marblehead and its school department spent more than $3.2 million on legal services from fiscal 2018 through fiscal 2025, with townwide costs rising from about $418,000 in FY18 to nearly $780,000 in FY25. The schools drove much of the recent increase, spending about $335,000 in FY24 and nearly $494,000 in FY25 against a $105,000 budget each year. Town Administrator Thatcher Kezer said legal costs are hard to predict because they respond to outside situations and contract negotiation cycles.
