Total Performance Sports in Malden Closing After 28 Years

Owner and founder C.J. Murphy announced this week that Total Performance Sports will close for good at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23, after nearly 28 years, citing operating costs and revenue that no longer covers expenses. Murphy said the gym had already cut expenses and labor costs while marketing for new members in an attempt to stay open. The business began in the late 1990s in a roughly 900-square-foot space inside Rich Angelo's Karate Academy in Everett and expanded several times in the years that followed.
