Malden Approves Cottage Food Kitchen Rules for 2027

The City Council approved a zoning change allowing retail residential kitchens, or cottage food operations, as a permitted home occupation beginning Jan. 1, 2027. Residents will be able to prepare certain shelf-stable foods at home for direct sale through farmers' markets, craft fairs and online or mail orders, with prearranged pickups allowed at the residence; other retail and wholesale transactions on the premises remain prohibited. Resident Marlene Galla, among those who pushed for the change, has been renting commercial kitchen space in Melrose since May and told Patch that such space can cost $1,000 a month and often requires long commitments.
