Lexington High Junior Wins $50,000 Malaria-Research Fellowship

Rajarshi Mandal, a 16-year-old Lexington High School junior, won a $50,000 Davidson Fellowship on Sept. 21 for a mathematical model that optimizes how malaria-preventing mosquito nets are distributed worldwide. About 200 million insecticide-treated nets are handed out each year, mostly divided by population, a method that ignores insecticide resistance, seasonal transmission spikes and nets wearing out; in testing, Mandal's approach prevented twice as many infections using the same number of nets. He is one of more than 20 students nationwide to earn the scholarship this year, and said he began the work after watching footage of fishermen weaving donated nets into fishing dragnets.
