Reenactor polishing powder horn mistaken for armed man at Grace Chapel
Police were called to Grace Chapel at 59 Worthen Road around 3:20 p.m. Friday after a report of a shirtless man with a gun in the parking lot, prompting officers to set a perimeter and lock down a building holding several programs, including ones with children. A search located the man, who was waiting to pick up his wife, a Grace Chapel employee, and was polishing a powder horn — a musket-era gunpowder container — outside his vehicle because of the heat; security video corroborated his account. The response closed the parking lot and parts of Worthen Road, and the department said it recognizes the concern the incident caused for the community, especially parents.
