Lexington Visitor Center guides battle heat in historic costumes
On July 27, with temperatures pushing 85 degrees and little shade on the Battle Green, guide Casey Farnsworth fielded a tourist's question about the heat in breeches, stockings, two layers of shirts and a tricorne hat: "I'm very hot, it does not breathe." The Visitor Center's period clothing comes from a local vendor who makes garments authentic to the 18th century in both style and material, mostly linen of the kind a commoner would have worn. The historical walking tours run four times a day year-round and last about 1.5 hours outdoors, and the center's 21 guides are trained to manage the exposure through clothing modifications and other small tweaks.
