Residents to pay new fees for banned waste items starting Sept. 1

Starting September 1, Lexington residents will pay fees to dispose of items no longer accepted as regular trash under MassDEP waste bans, including mattresses and box springs ($49.50), appliances with Freon ($44.00) or without ($27.50), and CRTs/electronics ($28.60 to $53.90). Residents can schedule and pay for collections through a new tab in the town's LexSortSmart tool, available at lexingtonma.gov/trash and as a mobile app; appliances and electronics will be picked up on your trash day. Fee-waiver information is available for eligible residents, and the town says the fees are meant to cover collection and disposal costs, not to generate revenue.
