Hazardous Chemicals and Radioactive Materials Removed from Lexington Home

State and federal hazmat teams spent several days clearing picric acid and other unstable, explosive, and radioactive materials from an unoccupied house at 23 Longfellow Road, where a chemist had lived before passing away. The Lexington Fire Department was tapped to assist after a licensed contractor found the materials were beyond their scope, drawing in the State Police Bomb Squad, an FBI bomb technician, and state environmental officials. Officials reported no indication of criminal activity, and the materials were transferred by bomb technicians to a DPW truck filled with sand for disposal without incident.
