Somerville, Cambridge advance Elm-Beacon Connector safety project

Somerville is wrapping up the bid process for the quick-build portions of the Elm-Beacon Connector, with markings and signal work nearly out to bid and new signs already going up; the city aims to finish by Thanksgiving. The project calms Elm Street and makes crossings at Willow Avenue and The Mix, the former Porter Square Shopping Mall, more pedestrian friendly, adds a raised crosswalk at Cherry Street near the Kennedy Elementary School, and converts Mossland Street to a "Neighborhood Way." It also builds a separated bike lane from Davis to Union Square with a spur to Beacon Street, feeding the raised, separated lane that runs to Inman and Kendall squares, while Cambridge makes similar changes on Beech Street.
