Cambridge Council Votes to Temporarily Restore ShotSpotter

The City Council voted 6-3 on Aug. 3 to reactivate the ShotSpotter gunshot-detection system for 90 days, reversing course months after ordering police to decommission it over surveillance and over-policing concerns. During the trial the city will convene a panel of residents to recommend whether to keep the technology; lead sponsor Councillor Marc McGovern and co-sponsor Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui had both voted earlier this year to remove it. Debate reignited after the July 4 shooting death of Xavier Bautista, a Department of Public Works employee, near Sennott Park. Most public commenters opposed reactivation, and Councillor Simmons invoked a charter right to leave chambers.
