Nine Candidates Face Off in Marathon State Legislative Debates

The Somerville Democratic City Committee hosted three back-to-back forums for roughly three hours Saturday evening at Somerville High School, covering the open 34th and 27th Middlesex House seats and the 2nd Middlesex Senate seat that includes Cambridge. All three seats lack an incumbent: Reps. Christine Barber and Erika Uyterhoeven are both running for the Senate seat Patricia Jehlen is vacating after more than 20 years, alongside Cambridge Vice Mayor Burhan Azeem and Somerville City Councilor Matt McLaughlin. Because all nine candidates are Democrats and no Republicans are running, the September 1 primary is expected to decide the races.
