Man Charged in Fatal Jamaicaway Crash

A Suffolk County grand jury indicted Luis Bermudez Torres, 23, of Lowell. Prosecutors say he drove 103 mph on the Jamaicaway on Aug. 17 while fleeing an earlier rear-end collision, then lost control on a curve and crossed the median, in a crash that injured a pregnant woman and killed her 26-week-old fetus. Torres was arraigned Monday on charges of manslaughter, reckless motor vehicle homicide, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and is held on $50,000 cash bail on the condition he not drive.
