Council preview: drought water purchase, Huron Ave bike-lane debate
At Monday's 5:30 p.m. City Council meeting, City Manager Yi-An Huang is asking for $2.3 million from the $7.8 million Water Fund Balance to buy water from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority. The purchase would ensure reliable service during ongoing drought conditions affecting the city's reservoirs at Hobbs Brook, Stony Brook and Fresh Pond. Councillors Cathie Zusy, E. Denise Simmons and Tim Flaherty are also proposing a five-year delay of separated bike lanes on Outer Huron Avenue, citing the loss of about 44 parking spaces and petitions signed by 1,400 people, while others say the area can be made friendlier to walking and biking without big problems for drivers.
