Two Cambridge Family Shelters to Close October 31
Two emergency family shelters at St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in The Port will shut Oct. 31, forcing eight families to relocate after the sites were excluded from a state contract following funding cuts. The shelters, which can hold up to 14 families, have operated for more than 40 years in partnership with the Hildebrand Family Self-Help Center, funded through contracts with the state's Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities. Councillors E. Denise Simmons and Marc McGovern filed an Aug. 3 policy order urging the state and Hildebrand to work with St. Paul to preserve the locations; if they close, families would be moved to other Hildebrand sites in Cambridge and the Boston area.
