Twenty states file amicus brief backing Harvard in funding battle
Democratic attorneys general from 20 states and the District of Columbia asked a federal appeals court on Monday to uphold a ruling that the Trump administration acted unlawfully when it froze Harvard's research funding amid a dispute over campus antisemitism. A spokesperson for Washington state's attorney general said the brief focuses on the public benefit of research institutions and the harms of federal attacks on such research, and does not address the merits of the government's position on events at Harvard. An official in Michigan's attorney general's office said the brief argues universities should be able to handle internal issues without the threat of funding cuts, calling research universities critical to state economies.
