Cambridge Nears Deadline on Separated Bike Lane Network
A report presented at the Aug. 3 City Council meeting shows Cambridge has built 18.78 miles of separated bike lanes since the Cycling Safety Ordinance took effect in 2020, including 3.28 miles completed or started between April 30, 2025 and May 1, 2026. That leaves 6.22 miles to reach the ordinance's 25-mile network requirement by November 2026, with contested stretches on outer Huron Avenue and ongoing work on Massachusetts Avenue. Most of this year's lanes were quick-build installations using flex posts and paint, though sections on Third Street and Mass. Ave. required constructed lanes; the city held 17 public events and meetings on the work over the same period.
