Cambridge's New Zoning Rules Fuel Development Fight in West Cambridge

A developer wants to demolish a single-family house on the tree-lined cul-de-sac of 9 Wyman Road and replace it with a six-story, 56-unit apartment building just feet from shorter neighbors. Neighbors have launched a "Stop 9 Wyman" website and asked the historical commission to landmark the home and halt its demolition, without success; there are whispers of a lawsuit. Projects like it were the goal of the citywide zoning overhaul the City Council passed near-unanimously last year, which allows four-to-six-story buildings across the city.
