Council Delays ShotSpotter Reinstatement Vote
A special City Council meeting called to address public safety after the July 4 killing of Xavier Bautista ended with no action Thursday when Councillor Ayah Al-Zubi used her charter right to delay a vote on reinstating ShotSpotter for 90 days. The session drew four dozen public commenters and hours of debate over the proposal from councillors E. Denise Simmons and Tim Flaherty. Al-Zubi criticized colleagues for politicizing Bautista's death and said she would consider the technology only when community-based organizations have adequate support and funding.
